Tulip city walls mural festival | holland, MI 2026
This nearly 200’ long mural of a rat, cats, and a rabbit playing amongst constellations ran the block along Black River Public School, a K-12 school.
I wanted a mural that called to the idea of playing, while also referencing Black River and the Eastcore neighborhood. An idealized night sky. Amongst the Leo, Lynx, Lepus, and Eridanus constellations (two cats, a rabbit, and a river constellation) float chicory and goldenrod— two flowers found amongst the sidewalk cracks on site. These plant species are a charismatic native and a naturalized beneficial plant found within feet of the site. A tale of coexistence.
In front of these a rat (a reference to Black River’s mascot) playfully chases a much larger rabbit, which in turn chases two neigborhood cats. In the real world these species may not exactly get along, but in this Eastcore idealized sky, they play.
